I started keeping a paper notebook again last month, and it has quietly become the best part of my morning. Before the laptop opens and the day starts making demands, I sit by the window with a cup of coffee and write one page by hand. Nothing important, usually. The weather, a dream I half remember, a small thing someone said that stuck with me.
The habit came from a friend who has filled dozens of notebooks over the years. She told me the trick is not to aim for anything. No essays, no projects, just one honest page. Handwriting slows the mind down in a way typing never does for me. When I type I edit as I go, deleting half my sentences before they finish.
Some mornings the page fills with lists of small errands. Other mornings a little essay appears out of nowhere. Either way I start the day feeling like a person who thinks clearly, instead of a person reacting to a screen. If you have been meaning to write more, try the oldest tool first. One notebook, one pen, one page a day.
